The years that shape everything after
Key Stage 1 is where a child's relationship with learning is formed. These are the years when reading clicks into place, when numbers begin to make sense and when a child decides, often without anyone realising, whether school is a place of confidence or anxiety.
Get these years right, and everything that follows becomes easier. Get them wrong, and gaps appear that can take years to close.
That is why our Key Stage 1 programme is built around two things above all: strong foundations and individual attention. In small classes of up to 15 children, our qualified teachers can give each child the patience, encouragement and careful instruction that early learning demands, something that is simply impossible in a class of 30.
For families, there is a third element: a learning environment where Islamic values are present from the very first lesson, so that a child's faith and their education grow together from the start.
A complete British curriculum foundation
Our Key Stage 1 programme follows the British National Curriculum, covering the core areas a child needs at this stage. Lessons are designed to be engaging and age-appropriate, with plenty of repetition, encouragement and hands-on learning.
English
Children develop phonics, early reading, handwriting and the beginnings of writing. We focus on building a genuine love of reading alongside the technical skills: decoding, comprehension and confident self-expression.
Mathematics
Number sense, counting, basic addition and subtraction, shapes and measurement. We build mathematical confidence through clear, structured teaching and plenty of practice, so children develop fluency rather than fear.
Science
Curiosity is at the heart of KS1 science. Children explore the natural world, plants and animals, materials and the seasons, learning to observe, ask questions and describe what they see.
History
An introduction to the past: significant people, events and how things have changed over time.
Geography
Exploring the world around them: places, maps, weather and their local environment.
ICT
Early digital skills and computational thinking, taught in an age-appropriate, hands-on way.
Islamic Studies
Foundational Islamic knowledge: stories of the prophets, good character and adab and the basics of faith, taught gently and age-appropriately.
Online learning that actually works for little ones
A common worry parents have is whether young children can really learn online. It's a fair question, and the answer lies entirely in how it's done.
Large online classes don't work for 5- to 7-year-olds. Children that age need to be seen, spoken to directly and kept engaged. That is exactly why our classes are capped at 15. In a small class, the teacher can call on each child by name, watch their faces for understanding and keep every single child involved throughout the lesson.
Our KS1 lessons are live, interactive and kept to age-appropriate lengths to match young attention spans. Teachers use visuals, stories and plenty of encouragement to keep learning lively and positive.

Why 15 children, not 30, changes everything at this age
At Key Stage 1, class size isn't a minor detail: it's the single biggest factor in whether a young child thrives or struggles.
A 5-year-old in a class of 30 may go an entire morning without the teacher speaking to them directly. They may not understand an instruction and have no opportunity to say so. They may quietly fall behind in reading before anyone notices.
In a BRS class of up to 15, none of that happens. Every child is visible, every child is heard, and every child's progress is tracked individually. If a child is struggling with a sound, a letter or a number, the teacher knows immediately and acts.
What a week of KS1 looks like
Children at BRS Key Stage 1 follow a structured but gentle weekly timetable. Lessons are spread across the week in a rhythm that suits young learners, with enough structure to build routine, with the flexibility that online learning allows.
A typical week has daily English and Maths as the core, with Science and the non-core subjects woven through. Sessions are interactive and varied, and there is always time for questions, encouragement and consolidation.
Because everything is online, there is no commute, no rushed mornings and no school-gate stress, just your child, ready to learn, in a calm and familiar environment.
You're part of the team
At Key Stage 1, the partnership between home and school matters enormously. We don't expect parents to be teachers, but a little support at home makes a real difference at this age.
We keep parents informed about what their child is learning and offer simple, practical guidance on how to reinforce it: reading together, practising letters and numbers and encouraging curiosity. Our teachers are accessible and communicative, and you'll always know how your child is getting on.
