Why Small Class Sizes Make Such a Big Difference
The average UK class has around 28 pupils. We explain why fewer students in a class can transform a child's confidence, engagement and results.

The average UK class has around 28 children, and it's not uncommon to find classrooms stretching to 30 students and more. For a lot of children, that number alone explains why school felt like something to survive rather than somewhere to grow.
Class size isn't just an administrative detail. It quietly shapes almost everything about how a child experiences learning.
Attention is finite
A teacher with thirty pupils has, on average, about ninety seconds of individual attention per child in an hour, and that's before behaviour, admin and interruptions eat into it. In a small group, the same teacher can actually notice when a specific child's understanding wobbles, and address it in the moment rather than three weeks later.
Quieter children stop disappearing
In a big class, the confident few answer everything and the quieter majority learn that staying invisible is safest. Shrink the group and there's nowhere to hide, in the best way.
- Every child gets asked, not just the fastest hands.
- Misunderstandings surface early, before they harden.
- Children build the confidence to be wrong out loud, which is where real learning happens.
A child who feels seen engages differently. Small groups make being seen the default, not the exception.
Feedback becomes personal
With fewer pupils, feedback stops being a grade at the bottom of a page and becomes a genuine conversation. The teacher knows this child, their habits, their gaps and what they did last week, and can build on it deliberately.
None of this requires a fancy method. It just requires enough room in the room. That's the whole case for keeping classes small, and it's a big part of why families notice a change so quickly.
